RNIB Book Site

Help: register and login

Register on the site

Registration consists of three steps.

Step 1: Enter house name or number and postcode

Enter your house number or name and full UK postcode in the form and press the continue button.

This will bring up a single address or a list of addresses depending on the information entered.

Step 2: Confirm correct address

If a list of addresses is found then select your address from the list and press the continue button.

Once a single address is shown check the details and edit if necessary. When the address is correct select the continue button. If the address is not correct use the link to get the correct address. Once you press the continue button you will go to step 3.

Step 3: Enter personal details

This page consists of a form requesting:

  • Personal details ie title, first name, surname etc
  • Security details ie email address and password. All security details are entered twice to check for typing errors
  • Formats to include in the search or browse on the site
  • Other details eg phone, fax and whether you want other information from RNIB

It is important that if you have a sight problem you make sure you are registered as "myself or another blind or partially sighted person" otherwise you will not be able to join the BookStream book club to listen to streamed audio books.

Login to the site

To login enter your email address in the username field in the login form and then your password. Press enter or select the login button to login.

Help on problems logging in to the site

I have forgotten my password

If you have forgotten your password then you can have a new password emailed to you. In order to do this:

  1. Select the "forgotten your password" link, which is under the "login" button on the home or login pages.
  2. A new page will load allowing you to enter your email address and postcode.
  3. Once you have entered your details, select the "get password" button and you will be returned to the previous page. An email will be sent to you with your new password. This will be a random selection of letters and numbers and you can change this to something more memorable using the "My account" menu when you have received your password and logged on.

I am having trouble logging in and I know I am using the correct password

If you are having problems logging in with the correct password, check your email address. If you have more than one email address, or if you have changed your email address, then it could be that you are trying to login with a different email address to the one that you registered with. If you want to change the email address you use to login to the book site you can use the My Account menu.

I am having trouble logging in and I know I am using the correct email address and password

You may be having problems logging in when you know you are using the correct email address and password. If this is the case, then you have probably got "Auto Complete for User Names and Passwords on Forms" enabled if you are using Internet Explorer.

Unfortunately, screen readers place the cursor at the end of the text in password fields. Therefore, if you are using a screen reader, you will not be aware that your password is already entered, as it will not be read out. This means that you will enter your password and submit your details, believing them to be all correct. The reality is, your password will be incorrect as it will be entered twice in the password input box without you realising.

NB This problem only applies if you are using Internet Explorer

How to read the password field in JAWS
When you have tabbed into the password box, in order to get JAWS to read your password, you must:

  1. Have JAWS in Forms mode
  2. Select "Shift" and "Home" key. This highlights all the text in the password box
  3. If you now enter your password, it will overwrite any text that is already there

Disabling AutoForm in Internet Explorer

In order to turn the AutoForm off in Internet Explorer:

  1. Select "Tools" from the Menu along the top, and select "Internet Options" from the drop down menu
  2. Select the "Content" tab, which is the fourth button along, from the left, at the very top
  3. Select "AutoComplete", which can be found about two thirds of the way down, on the right, under the "Personal Information" heading
  4. In the AutoComplete Settings option box, under the "Use AutoComplete for" heading, uncheck "User names and passwords on forms". Under the "Clear AutoComplete history" heading, you have the option to select "Clear Forms" to clear all previously saved form entries, and to select "Clear Passwords" to clear all previously saved form passwords
  5. Select "OK" and select "OK" again to make your changes effective
