Help: Accessibility and layout
The visual layout of the site
Visually the main RNIB site navigation is at the top of the page. Underneath
this each page is split into two columns. The left-hand column contains the
Book Site navigation and the other contains the Book Site content.
Reading the site with a screen reader
The site uses CSS2 to control the presentation and layout. For screen reader
users this means that the content is spoken before the majority of the
navigation. The heading, which is spoken first, contains links to the main site
navigation and the Book Site navigation. Then the content is spoken.
Content of the site
The content begins with a heading level 1: RNIB Book Site. This is the only
heading level 1 on the page. The next line contains a heading level 2 which
identifies the part of the Book Site you are on e.g. Search.
On other pages e.g. view results, there are headings at further levels to help
navigation.
If your screen reader allows you to jump directly to heading levels this can
speed up the site navigation. For other screen reader users links are used
where appropriate in addition to heading levels to allow quick navigation
between elements on the page.
Site navigation
The navigation bar on the left-hand side of the page contains the links for the
Book Site. These allow you to jump directly to different parts of the site e.g.
your bookshelf or to search or browse for books. For screen reader users the
navigation bar is spoken after the content or you can use the skip to site navigation
link at the top of the page to go directly to the navigation bar. There is also a "home" link
which takes you to the home page for the book site. All navigation links have
been designed for use in a links list.
The site has been designed so that you can always use your back button on your
browser to go back to previous pages (apart from after checkout when you need
to use the navigation links for security reasons). There are also links on some
pages to go back to your search results. These occur after you have added a
book to your shopping basket or to your bookshelf. While you can use the back
button at these points it is quicker to use the link to go back to the search
results.
